چکیده

Differential capacitance versus frequency curves simulated for different equivalent circuits representing different cases of anion adsorption have been analyzed. The analysis showed that in all cases with an ideal, homogeneous electrode surface, the real value of the differential capacitance, representing the sum of the double layer and adsorption capacitances (independent of frequency) could be obtained only at frequencies lower than about 2 Hz. In the case of real surfaces, presented by introduction of a constant phase element instead of a double layer capacitance, differential capacitance versus frequency curves were found to be more complex, with no possibility to obtain values of the double layer capacitance at high and adsorption capacitance at low frequencies, since the differential capacitance was found to depend on frequency in the whole range of frequencies (10 4 /10 Hz). Chloride adsorption onto the Ag(111) face in 0.01 M NaCl solution was found to follow the approach initiated in this work by introducing a constant phase element instead of the double layer capacitance. It is shown that impedance diagrams deviate from the ‘ideal double layer behavior’ and that differential capacitance versus potential curves depend on frequency. It is confirmed by the analysis of differential capacitance versus frequency curves that this is the consequence of adsorption of chloride anions presented by adsorption resistance and capacitance connected in series, as well as of inhomogeneity of the real single crystal face. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Electrochemical assessment of imidazole derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 3.5 NaCl solution

The corrosion inhibition efficiency of benzimidazole, 2-methylbenzimidazole and 2- aminobenzimidazole for mild steel immersed in 3.5 NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS at concentration range from 10-5 to 10-2 M of imidazoles and temperature range from 30 to 50°C. In addition, DC polarization was examined to determine inhibition mechanism at concentratio...

Quantum chemical studies on adsorption of imidazole derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 3.5 NaCl solution

Adsorption of benzimidazole, 2-methylbenzimidazole and 2-aminobenzimidazole on mild steel in 3.5 NaCl solution was studied using density function theory DFT calculations. In this regard, charge transfer resistance Rct and double layer capacitance Cdl obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS were used to calculate surface coverage and to build prediction models. When prediction mod...

Intrinsic limitations of impedance measurements in determining electric double layer capacitances

This paper aims to clarify the intrinsic limitations of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in measuring electric double layer (EDL) capacitance. For more than two decades, capacitances measured using EIS at low frequencies have been reported to be significantly smaller than those measured using other techniques without any definitive explanations. In this paper, EIS measurements were ...

CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF 6063 ALUMINUM ALLOY IN ETHYLENE GLYCOL-WATER SOLUTION

The electrochemical behavior of 6063 aluminum alloy in ethylene glycol-water mixture was investigated by polarization curves and AC impedance measurements (EIS).  The results obtained from polarization curves showed that corrosion rate decreased with increasing ethylene glycol concentration. EIS data showed the decrease in the interface capacitance which caused by adsorption of ethylene glycol ...
